A three-day nationwide transport strike starting tomorrow until Friday, September 19, is set by transport group Samahang Manibela Mananakay at Nagkaisang Terminal ng Transportasyon or MANIBELA.

The movement will coincide with the one-day transport strike on Thursday, September 18, of the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide or PISTON.

In a series of Facebook posts, the leading transport groups cited price hikes and almost P12,000 paid monthly in value-added tax (VAT) and excise tax on diesel, which is wasted on 'the gambling and luxury of politicians'.

The groups also called out the 'inaction' of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) towards jeepney modernization, leaving financially deprived drivers.

"Kaya transport strike ang anyo ng protesta, dahil dito napipilitang makinig ang gobyerno. Hindi tatamaan ng trapik ang mga kurap na pulitiko na may luxury cars at driver, pero mapipilitan silang umaksyon kapag sama-samang tumigil ang transportasyon!" said MANIBELA Chairman Mar Valbuena.

On September 21, MANIBELA will offer free rides to passengers on the way to Luneta Park, and homeward after. The Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Plt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured that they will closely monitor the three-day strike for peace and order. The police force in areas expected to be affected by the strike will collaborate with local government units to deploy vehicles for stranded commuters.

MANIBELA estimates that over 100,000 drivers will join the movement.
